L’enfant fantastique, un personnage difficile à cerner. De quel côté se situe-t-il, du réel ou du surnaturel ? Est-il innocent ou corrompu ? Quelle place la psychanalyse occupe-t-elle dans la création de ce personnage ambigu ? Comment expliquer que l’irruption de ce personnage dans la littérature fantastique coïncide avec la naissance du cinéma et de la psychanalyse ?

C’est ce que nous proposons d’analyser, dans cette thèse, à travers six œuvres romanesques Le Tour d’écrou de Henry James, Les Coucous de Midwich de John Wyndham Rosemary’s Baby d’Ira Levin, L’Exorciste de William Peter Blatty, L’Autre de Thomas Tryon, Shining de Stephen King et leurs adaptations cinématographiques, Les Innocents de Jack Clayton, Le Village des damnés de Wolf Rilla, Rosemary’s Baby de Roman Polanski, L’Exorciste de William Friedkin, L’Autre de Robert Mulligan, Shining de Stanley Kubrick.

Une poétique et une esthétique de l’enfant fantastique se construisent par une typologie inhérente à l’enfance, par une étude des procédés narratifs spécifiques au roman et au cinéma, par l’examen de l’univers représenté et enfin par une analyse des représentations métapsychologiques. L’enfant fantastique s’avère être un personnage médium, intermédiaire, un faux-semblant qui scandalise par son apparente innocence.

The child of the Fantastic is not a character easy to define which side is he on: natural or supernatural? Is he innocent or corrupt? What part does psychoanalysis play in the creation of this ambiguous character? How can we explain that the character’s irruption in the literature of the fantastic coincides with the birth of cinema and psychoanalysis?

This is what is analysed in this dissertation which deals with six novels: The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Midwich Cuckoos by John Wyndham, Rosemary’s Baby by Ira Levin, TheExorcist by William Peter Blatty, The Other by Thomas Tryon, Shining by Stephen King, and their adaptation for the screen, The Innocents by Jack Clayton, Village of the Damned by Wolf Rilla, Rosemary’s Baby by Roman Polanski, TheExorcist by William Friedkin, The Other by Robert Mulligan, and Shining by Stanley Kubrick.
